Oddball: Week 16 Recap

Kirk continues his late push, while Matt seems determined to end this thing completely even. Are you underwhelmed?
where's my lighter?

Oddball is our weekly NFL gambling competition where we each get $100 every week and try to outdo each other. The loser has to eat a well-done Applebee's steak.

Recap: Matt's Picks

$100.00 wagered $42.61 lost +$54.37 for the season

Welcome to the timeless void that is the week between Christmas and New Year's. My mind is barely functioning today, but I'm aware enough to know that I lost a modest sum this week and continued to revert towards $0 profit for the season.

Bills -12.5

Straight Up ATS (-115)

I was hoping that Easton Stick was bad enough to offset the new coach bounce, but that turned out not to be the case. The Bills did just enough to eek this one out and Josh Allen didn't do anything to help my MVP bet on him. The Dolphins ended up clinching the AFC East, so the Bills won't get a home playoff game. But if the season ended today they would go to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in round one. Intriguing for sure.

❌ Lost $20.00

Titans +3.0

Straight Up ATS (-110)

I ended up with a frustrating push in this game. Pretty annoying as I think I read this one right. The Titans led for a huge portion of this game, but because they are pretty bad, they just could never get that second score to put the Seahawks away. Really not sure what to make of the Seahawks' playoff chances. Right now they'd head to Detroit to take on Goof and the Lions. But it would be way more fun if they swapped places with the Rams so that we could see Stafford go against his old team.

😐 Pushed

Vikings +3.0

Straight Up ATS (-118)

Ugh, this was another tough loss as it really looked like I had the right read on this one. The Vikings hung around nicely in the first half. They had an apparent scoop and score off of a Goof fumble, but the refs bailed him out and the Lions ended up getting a touchdown. A 14-point swing the wrong way in a game with a 3-point spread is not what you want. Boo.

❌ Lost $20.00

Cardinals +4.5

Straight Up ATS (-115)

I should have listened to myself when I wrote, "This game might be a trap". Just a bad pick that wasn't ever particularly close to covering. Justin Fields continues to do just enough to make it a tough decision for Chicago. It will be interesting to see what they end up doing.

❌ Lost $20.00

Ravens +5.5

Straight Up ATS (-115)

A very impressive performance by Lamar Jackson, who seems to have taken his cocktail of Imodium and Vitamin C before the game. Purdy's 4-interception night would have been good for my Josh Allen MVP bet, except for the fact that Lamar was on the other side of the field in this one lighting up the "best team" in the league. It seems like it will be his award to lose during the final two games of the season. Next week's showdown against Miami in a battle for the first round bye will be a great game. Looking forward to that one!

✅ Won $17.39

Kirk's Picks

$163.77 wagered $23.19 won -$676.55 for the season

Another week, another totally negligible total in the won/lost column. Considering how I've been running in the middle of the year, this is progress.

Rams -3.5

Straight up ATS (-115)

A great start to the week with what I actually predicted occurring. The Rams defense was passable (mostly Derek Carr sucks) but more importantly their offense looked elite. Puka Nacua is so good and has taken Cooper Kupp's spot as the WR 1 for the Rams. Kupp also had a few dropped passes, some hard, some easy, so he's officially washed up and needs to be hung out with your other laundry this week. I do not want to play the Rams in the playoffs.

P.S.

I wanted to add the Rams -3.5 to our bonus picks and Matt wanted to add Nawlins'. We didn't add either as a result and I totally don't resent him.

It's rare that I'm so, so, so right about a pick so I totally won't resent Matt for capping our bonus pick winnings here.

Merry Christmas Matt!

✅ Won $86.96

Same Game Parlay (+242)

SF 49ers -5.5, Over 46.5

I have a real problem with recency bias, and obviously the 49ers have been kicking the shit out of teams all year and by much more of late, my Eagles included.

This pick wasn't anything against the Ravens, just the fact that the 49ers looked like an unstoppable force.

Brock Purdy reminded me last night "Hey asshole, this is football, anything can happen".

Point taken.

Even though I lost this and undercut any real chance of a comeback in this competition I was happy to see the 49ers lose as a silver lining. They can be beat! Purdy looked mentally shaken and although I doubt he has another 4 INT game ahead of him it was nice to see they are in fact human after all.

Also my losses this year are capped under $1K so again, silver linings.

❌ Lost $63.77

Bonus Picks

$100.00 wagered $134.87 won +$779.30 for the season

Wow these have been fun and profitable for us this season! After Kirk eats his well done Applebee's steak, we might have to head over to Del Frisco's and get a dry aged porterhouse for two with these winnings.

Same Game Parlay (+135)

Tyler Higbee over 2.5 receptions
Alvin Kamara over 2.5 receptions
Kyren Williams over 49.5 rushing yards

Enjoy your comatose dream state of a holiday week! Back with more mediocre picks on Thursday!
