Oddball: Week 15 Recap

A small loss for Matt and a decent win for Kirk. I'm actually so accustomed to losing I originally typed a loss for Kirk as a freudian slip. I suck!

Oddball is our weekly NFL gambling competition where we each get $100 every week and try to outdo each other. The loser has to eat a well-done Applebee's steak.

Man, I am sooooo average at this. It's going to be hilarious when it takes me 18 weeks to make like $18. But the joy of watching my friend suffer through a rubbery sirloin at a "neighborhood bar and grill" is truly priceless, so I'm coming out ahead either way.

Saturday "Neglect Your Family" Teaser (-134)

This loss was karma for a) encouraging our readers to ignore their loved ones and b) putting Mitch Trubisky in a teaser. I deserved this one. What an awful bet. Neither team was particularly close to covering — although somehow the Steelers had a 13-0 lead early in their game.

Okay... real quick, hear me out. This might be sacreligious to the hardcore football people. But it needs to be asked... Are we sure Mike Tomlin is still a good coach? Keeping Matt Canada for as long as he did might be a fireable offense on its own. Anyway, let's stop betting on, but keep rooting for, the Steelers so we can bet heavily against them as the 7-seed on Wild Card Weekend.

Yep, as expected, Desmond Ridder should not be a divisional road favorite under any circumstances. This game was truly disgusting. It was raining so hard you could hardly see anything during the four minutes Red Zone had a reason to cut to this game. It was the perfect scenario. Enjoy it, Carolina. That's the last time you're winning a game this season (vs. Green Bay, at Jacksonville, vs. Tampa).

Straight up ATS (-104)

Somehow ended up pushing this one. Kirk counted it as a win on our bet tracking spreadsheet (we're nerds!), and I don't blame him. The Bears were firmly in control of this one, taking a 10-point lead into the 4th quarter. Joe Flacco was in full meltdown mode for the Browns, coughing up 3 interceptions. But it still wasn't enough to get the cover. The Bears choked it away by simply not covering Amari Cooper (51 yard touchdown) or David Njoku (31 yard reception to set up a field goal) on back-to-back possessions. And THEN, to cap things off, Darnell Moody dropped a Hail Mary to end the game...

Straight up ATS (-115)

Pure domination. Sorry for anyone who was playing against James Cook and his 227 yards from scrimmage in their fantasy playoffs. As mentioned when I made this bet, the motivation factor could not be ignored here. The Bills are in do-or-die mode and the Cowboys looked like they were mostly locked into the 5-seed. However, with the Eagles seemingly in a tailspin, this loss might look worse for Dallas in a couple of weeks.

Either way, I'm happy to be holding my Bills to win the division ticket (+330; now +205) and my Josh Allen to win MVP ticket (+1400; now +800). Their remaining schedule is pretty interesting: at the corpse of the Chargers

home for Bailey Zappe and the Pats

at Miami potentially for the divison (they need to play the Cowboys and Ravens)

Hoping for some opportunities to hedge that division ticket in Week 18. Until then, let's go Buffalo.

Shame on me for getting sucked back into the Zach Wilson vortex. Haha, after I complimented him and the Jets defense last week, they went ahead and lost 30-0 to a Tyreek Hill-less Dolphins team. Fail.

The Patriots were a little bit more competitive, even leading this one 10-7 late in the second quarter. But, alas, the curse of Taylor Swift was not to be. The Chiefs did enough to grab a double-digit victory and will enjoy beating up on their horrible division with games against the Raiders and Chargers looming.

To be honest I totally forgot that there was football on Saturday this past week. I was watching my kids solo while my wife was out and didn't look at FanDuel until their bedtime.

It was a pleasant suprise to see my first bet won by 0.5. An instance of being glad I locked in the line when we made the picks on Thursday as the line eventually moved to 3 and was a push for most folks.

The Bengals easily handled business or so I imagined. Watching the highlights of the Bengals converting an amazing catch and score by T Higgs to force OT and stuffing the Vikings run game in OT to then kick the winning field goal was a bit of a shock.

I'm glad I didn't realize the game was on as my blood pressure didn't need that noise.
